Leave the Tropicana Hotel and follow signs for Highway 95 north on the Veterans Memorial Way for 405 miles, then left onto highway 50 for a further 32 miles into Carson. Traveling through Desert and Mountains Ranges, containing small towns in the region of Clark County. A very long drive through some great scenery with places to visit on route to break up the journey.
A small town 44 miles from Vegas, made up of large red rock formations and Sandstone Mountains having rugged hillsides and stunning views. The 4 main mountains are Turlehead, Kraft, Redcap and Calico Hills with rounded peaks and twisting canyons situated in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Also there’s a shopping area, a US Air Base, a State Prison and Billy the Kid Casino.
Continue road trip 55 miles into Pahrump in Nye County once again surrounded by mountain ranges.
The winery company operates several wineries and the samples are very good. There’s a mix or historic buildings and new dwellings which is why they call themselves, Heart of the new old west town. Several Casino Hotels are to be found in the town which is a pretty general thing whilst in the State of Nevada.
Continue road trip 167 miles passing through Beatty, a small mining town still retaining the Wild West image with its historic buildings plus the ghost town of Rhyolite.
Only 8 miles to the west is Death Valley but that’s another day to visit. Moving on……….
Another small town in Nye County steeped in mining history of gold and silver having the 2nd largest silver strike in Nevada. Discover the old mines with their winding gear and old equipment, some diggers operated by steam. A classic old type western town featuring Mizpah Casino Hotel built in 1907 the first permanent structure in Tonopan and many more historic dwellings.
Continue the last 223 miles of the road trip toward Carson City passing through the mountain ranges and desert.
A small town in the Mineral County, full of historic interest and surrounded by the Army Depot with a back view of mountains. Many places of interest including the Mineral County Museum, Ordnance Museum and the Walker Lake.
Situated in the Great Basin and filled by the Walker River, having no natural outlet, it lies on the southern shore in Nevada. After passing the lake next is Schurz a small town located on the Walker River Indian Reservation, while going over the bridge look forward and capture the Panasonic view of the mountains.
In the Lyon County with some history to be found at the Fort Churchill Historic Park. Explore the remains of the 1860s fort, used by the pony express and the army in the early days. Still on the highway 95 is the Lahontan Recreation Park containing the reservoir and lake surrounded by mountains which is located on the Carson River. The Park is dominated by high desert stage brush communities in woodland areas of Cottonwood and Willows scatted along the lake shore.
The wildlife in the park consists of Horses, Bobcat, Coyote, Fox and Deer, sharing with a variety of birds Waterfowl, Pelicans, Herons, Egrets Hawks and a nesting site for the Bald Eagle.
Continue on highway 95 turn left onto the highway 50 into Carson, book into the Mill House Inn Motel very nice motel for 3 nights.
